“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,
knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward.
You are serving the Lord Christ.”
— Colossians 3:23–24 (ESV)
There are days I’ve found myself grocery shopping, sending emails, or showing up to another Zoom meeting wondering, “Does any of this really count?”
I know I’m not the only one who’s wrestled with that. We work hard. We obey. We build what God has placed in our hands—but sometimes it feels like it’s happening in secret, doesn’t it?
That’s why these verses in Colossians hit different. Paul wasn’t talking to entrepreneurs or influencers. He was talking to bondservants—people who were overlooked, undervalued, and unseen in the eyes of society. And he told them, “Work like it’s for Jesus… because it is.”
And then he drops this line:
“…knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward.”
Let’s pause there. 👇
So, What Is This Inheritance?
This isn’t about a promotion, a paycheck, or praise from people. Paul is pointing us toward something far greater—a reward rooted in eternity:
- Our full inheritance in Christ as children of God (Romans 8:17)
- Eternal life and kingdom responsibility (1 Peter 1:3–5)
- God’s “well done” for faithfulness, even in the unseen (Matthew 25:21)
This isn’t works-based salvation. This is purpose-based obedience. And our obedience—even in the everyday—is noticed by the One who matters most.
What You Do in Obedience Is Never Wasted
If you’ve ever wondered whether your work has eternal value, let Colossians 3 remind you: it does. Every unseen act of faithfulness—every moment you showed up, served well, loved generously, or worked with integrity when no one clapped for you—He saw it. He’s still seeing it.
The world may measure success by numbers and noise. But heaven? It honors obedience.
So keep building.
Keep serving.
Keep sowing.
You’re not just working. You’re worshiping.
