Critics, Comments, and Calling: How to Handle Feedback on Your Blog

Wisdom & Work

Running a small business blog—or any blog rooted in purpose—takes courage. You’re not just publishing content; you’re putting your thoughts, ideas, and sometimes even your convictions out there for public consumption. And occasionally… criticism.

Let’s talk about that.

It can sting, right? You pour your heart into a post, hit publish, and someone leaves a comment that makes you want to hit delete everything. But not all criticism is created equal. And when you know how to tell the difference, you can turn even tough feedback into something valuable for your growth—and your readers’.

Thoughtful Criticism vs. Blog Bullies

Thoughtfully critical comments are a gift. Even if they challenge your ideas or offer a different perspective, these comments come from a place of engagement. They’re curious, insightful, and they open up the conversation rather than shut it down.

In fact, they’re an opportunity in disguise.

Just like a great speaker opens the floor for Q&A after a talk, your blog post invites conversation. These comments are your Q&A. They give you a chance to clarify, expand, and demonstrate your expertise with grace and humility.

Don’t shy away from them—lean in. Respond with warmth and insight. When readers see how you handle tough but thoughtful feedback, it builds trust. It shows you’re the real deal, not just a voice shouting into the void.

But What About the Trolls?

Then there’s the other kind of feedback. The kind that’s not about conversation—it’s about control.

Blog bullies (or trolls) leave comments that are unnecessarily harsh, personal, or disruptive. They’re not interested in dialogue; they’re looking for drama.

You don’t need to match their energy. In fact, don’t. Resist the urge to clap back or completely ignore them. Instead, take the middle path: acknowledge without engaging deeply. A simple “Thanks for sharing your perspective” can be enough to defuse a tense moment. And if a comment crosses the line into harassment or hate? You have every right to remove it. Your blog is your space.

Pro Tip: Don’t Miss the Opportunity

It’s easy to lump all critical comments into the “negative” pile. But the truth is, some of your best growth—and most powerful content—can come from addressing a well-placed challenge. A thick skin and a teachable spirit will take you far. Plus, those watching from the sidelines (a.k.a. future clients, collaborators, or supporters) will notice your integrity.
